The Weeknd - Trilogy album cover has a colour palette of black and white on the front and back as well as a close up of the weekend himself; which occurs in most of his videos also.

This black and white theme occurs throughout most of The Weeknd's music videos such as 'Wicked Games' and 'Next'.

The key features highlighted in 'Wicked games' include the black and white colour palette again as well as flashing lights.

The same key features highlighted in 'Next' also include the black and white colour palette which is made apparent throughout, including within the cover.

Reflect | What I remember from lessons in June.

In June we looked at a prezi showing what made a music video so popular, as well as conventions within certain music videos. We also looked at how we'll need permission to use music in A2 and features of camerawork, editing, mise-en-scene, generic signifiers and creativity and innovation. Also the purpose of a music video.

As a class we looked at a video on the top 100 most view Youtube videos.

From these we picked certain music videos and had to discuss what made them so popular and what was some music conventions within the video, a song me and my partner chose was
Shakira - Can't Remember to Forget You ft. Rihanna,



We chose this song as it seemed very simple, both artist are seen as eye candy towards to the audience and the video itself is directed in away called the male gaze (which is what we learned within A2).

In the other lessons we had also looked at copyright for music and that we would need to write a letter/e-mail towards our chosen record labels and ask for permission to use their song for next year in A2, that had led onto us doing it for summer work which can be seen in a different blog : http://candipop14group9.blogspot.co.uk/2014/09/summer-task-evidence-of-copyright.html

As well as all this we had looked at features of camerawork, editing, mise-en-scene, generic signifiers and creativity and innovation.

Features of camerawork included;

• Shot in basetracks
• Camera movements (Panning and tracking)
• Wide variety of shot types and angles (Close ups, mid shots, long shots, ect.)
• Shots mainly focus on artists or bands

Features of editing;

• Edited to the beat
• Pace matches the track
• Repeated shots
• Cuts between base tracks
• Non linear structure

Features of mise-en-scene;

• Artist performance
• Variety of locations and costumes
• Locations suit the genre
• Styling of costume, hair and make up suit genre
• High key lighting
• Props used

Features of generic signifiers;

• Clothes
• Location
• Pace of editing
• Style of choreography
• Age of artist and performers

Features of creativity and innovation;

• Referencing other media 
• Style of camerawork and editing

Andre Goodwin's theory - 'Dancing in the Distraction Factory

Goodwin had a theory that there are songs or music video fits into three types of relations between the songs and the videos; Illustration, Amplification And Disjuncture.

Illustration: I think this music video fits into illustration because the video  has a connection with the lyrics from the start of the song to the end. Also it tells a story according to Goodwin theory.
This song is: Magic!- Rude

Amplification: Took a while to look for a music video that was an Amplification, but I found this. It does have a small connection with the lyrics, but it has layers of meaning into her lyrics rather the music video.
Tori Kelly - Dear No One,

Disjuncture: A music video that has small connection to the lyrics. Another point is that it is filmed with in one location so there isnt much story to tell but to promote
kanye West- Mercy

What is the function of a music video.

The best example i can show is Psy - Gangnam Style

Psy was a Korean artist which no one didn't know before his famous 'Gangnam style' song came out.
When the song was release with the music video, it #1 in every chart for about a month.
For psy 'Gangnam style' it was to promote himself and to entertain the audience with his dance

The first stage of a function  music video is to promote the Artist.
The second is to entertain the audience.
The third is to symbolise something
The fourth is to evoke emotion into the audience (depending the genre of the music)
The last is for representation

Sometimes I think it depends on the artist whether they like symbolise sometime or to evoke emotion into the audience, but mostly I would prefer for promotion if they have a up-coming album, which can be a great awareness for audience to know. Another is to entertain, if the music video is very entertaining, I would like the music along with the artist as they can produce a good music video to entertain audience, however, if it can entertain, then I would have no interest for the music.
