Laura Mulvey's Theory

Laura Mulvey is a British feminist film theorist. Mulvey believed many music videos portray females through the 'Male Gaze'. 'The Male Gaze' being how men perceive women in a music video sexually whether it is through that way in which the woman is dressed to how she is made up.

For the lessons in June, i remembered that we're going to do a actual music video for A2, but we have to do ask for permission from the artist or record label if we could use their song for our music.

Research | Carol Vernallis' theory

Carol Vernallis is a music video theorist who is known for her theory based on editing within music videos and how multiple techniques are used such as base tracks, slow motion, jump cuts and special effect editing. As well as this she also says how camera work in a major part of a music video as it can make the video more attractive when, for example, matching to the beat of the song.

Waze & Odyssey - Bump & Grind with Waze & Odyssey vs R. Kelly is a very good music video to use when explaining Carol Vernallis' theory.

Just before the initial drop of the song there is a build up, within the video some of the build up contains slow motion and a lot of jump cuts, this suggests to us that the song is going to get faster and the various jump cuts help create a faster pace for the audience without even increasing the speed of the actual video, this is a great affect as you almost build tense for the audience.

Chris Brown feat. Usher & Rick Ross - New Flame

As the previous song didn't contain any base track editing I think this song shows it loads, base track editing is commonly used in hip/hop and RnB songs as the singers can then easily jump from scene to scene so the video still links to the lyrics. As you can see in Chris Brown - New Flame there's about 3 base tracks that feature the main signer and even extra base tracks that contain the signers featured on the song.

Research | Laura Mulvey's theory

Laura Mulvey is a British feminist film theorist, her theory is that all forms of media interpret that the person behind the camera is always male and the women onscreen must always appeal and attract the masculine figure behind the camera. This is more commonly known as "the male gaze" and what it means is the way when a woman is in front of the camera they must always "show off" and appeal to any male audiences behind it. Mulvey despised this as it suggested that women were just an object of desire and not shown the same way as a man would be in front of camera.

Features of the male gaze;

  • The camera shows continuous close ups of the women, normally when biting her lips or playing with her hair
  • It shows off the women's body purely to show visual pleasure towards the audience
  • The female character will be dressed to appeal to the audience, normally with as little clothing as possible
  • Relegates women to more so objects of attraction and desire rather than people

Music video showing the male gaze:

Robin Thicke - Blurred Lines ft. T.I., Pharrell

There is an explicit video of this, however I don't think that's needed to show off the male gaze within this video, as you can see all girls are practically unclothed wearing absolutely the bare minimum to what is needed, in addition to the actions the women do within the video also show off the male gaze, they constantly are flicking the hair, winking, biting or licking their lips to appeal to this masculine figure behind the figure which society has placed there according to Laura Mulvey.

Research | Andrew Goodwin's theory

Andrew Goodwin's theory on music videos is that they each follow a certain style to portray with the song or be completely different.

Amplification - This is when the music video and lyrics doesn't completely link, however the video is used to give a deeper meaning for the song, this is used mostly in RnB songs where lyrics usually come off as a love story or a form of romance, which can easily be exaggerated within a music video.

A music video that shows amplification is Drake - Hold On, We're Going Home ft. Majid Jordan

Disjuncture - This is when the music video and lyrics have no connection, it can be completely different and even contradict each other. There's not really a specific genre of music that is commonly seen with disjuncture music video.

A music video that shows disjuncture is Clean Bandit - Mozart's House.

Illustration - This is when the music video has a very literally connection with the lyrics, it shows exactly what is being said and unlike isn't exaggerated at all, unlike what can happen in music videos with amplification.

Illustration is quite hard to see in a full music video, but Owl City - Fireflies contains it a lot, words that he says mostly appear and when saying "fireflies" it shows actual fireflies.
